Ethiopia is expanding its maritime fleet to strengthen import and export capacity, with a focus on essential goods like fertilizer. The Ethiopian Shipping and Logistics enterprise already operates 10 ships that handled most of the country’s 1.9 million tons of fertilizer imports through Djibouti last year. Six new vessels are being added, including two with capacities of up to 62,000 tons, nearly matching Ethiopia’s largest existing ship. This expansion reduces reliance on foreign rentals, cuts costs, and positions Ethiopia for greater self-reliance and competitiveness in regional trade.
