Kenya’s Port of Mombasa delivered a historic performance in 2025, handling 45.45 million metric tonnes of cargo, a 10.9 percent increase from 2024, signaling strong momentum heading into 2026. Container traffic rose to 2.11 million TEUs, while imports surged 20.1 percent to 36 million tonnes, reflecting renewed regional economic activity and improved logistics efficiency. Transit cargo climbed sharply to 15.88 million tonnes, led by Uganda, Rwanda, the DRC and Tanzania, reinforcing Mombasa’s role as East Africa’s preferred trade corridor. Growth across KPA-managed ports—including Lamu’s jump to 799,161 tonnes and Kisumu’s 55 percent increase—underscores a broader national port revival. With major berth expansions, system upgrades and automation projects underway in 2026, KPA is positioning Mombasa to absorb rising trade volumes and support East Africa’s expanding commerce with confidence.
