Kenya and 18 other African countries, under the Maritime Organisation for Eastern, Southern and Northern Africa (MOESNA), are actively pushing to create a unified regional shipping line. They’re reviewing feasibility studies and a new maritime cargo protocol that would help strengthen indigenous shipping capacity and regional coordination. MOESNA’s Secretary-General Kassim Mpata stressed that this could reduce dependence on foreign shipping companies, improve ownership of vessels, and boost regional maritime trade. The proposal aims to set common rules for vessel movement, encourage local line investment, and make the region more resilient to external shocks like high freight rates.
