Ethiopia is expanding its maritime fleet to strengthen import and export capacity, with a focus on essential goods like fertilizer. The Ethiopian Shipping and Logistics enterprise already operates 10 ships that handled most of the country’s 1.9 million tons of fertilizer imports through Djibouti last year.

Djibouti’s economy is set to expand by 6% in 2025, according to the International Monetary Fund (IMF), fueled by Ethiopia’s growing demand for its port services.

Kenya has joined Tanzania in rolling out a container guarantee service, replacing costly cash deposits at ports. This reform will lower import costs and ease trade, providing a big boost to small-scale traders who once paid steep upfront fees.
