The United Arab Emirates (UAE) is exploring new trade routes across the Middle East as the region looks for more flexible alternatives to major shipping lanes such as the Strait of Hormuz and the Red Sea. The proposed plans include using UAE ports such as Fujairah and Khor Fakkan, which are located outside the Persian Gulf, to connect cargo overland through Saudi Arabia and onward to other regional markets. Some early links are already being tested, including sea-land connections from the UAE to Saudi Arabia’s Red Sea port of Jeddah and Gulf ports such as Dammam and Jubail. UAE port operators, including DP World and Abu Dhabi Ports, have also secured recent agreements in Jordan and Syria, supporting the country’s growing role in future regional trade networks. These developments show how the UAE is positioning itself to support safer, more connected, and more reliable cargo movement across the Middle East.
