High-level talks between Ethiopia and Djibouti on signaled renewed efforts to ease operational constraints facing Ethiopian logistics firms operating through Djibouti’s ports. Led by Prosperity Party Deputy Head Adem Farah, the Ethiopian delegation engaged President Ismail Omar Guelleh on reciprocity in port access, efficiency, and the recognition of Ethiopian multimodal transport operators (MTOs), including the Ethio-Djibouti Railway (EDR). Discussions followed Djibouti’s clarification that only Bills of Lading issued by shipping-line MTOs are legally valid, a position that has delayed operations for six Ethiopian-licensed MTOs. Both sides acknowledged the need to remove unnecessary barriers, halt unilateral tariff changes, and strengthen bilateral cooperation to safeguard vital trade and transit corridors.
