The Modjo–Hawassa Expressway is transforming Ethiopia’s logistics system by cutting travel time for freight from five hours to around three and reducing vehicle operating costs by 15–20%. Spanning 202 km and built to international standards, the expressway connects key industrial and trade hubs including Modjo Dry Port and Hawassa Industrial Park improving access to export routes and regional markets. As part of the Cairo–Cape Town Trans-African Highway, it strengthens cross-border freight movement with Kenya and supports AfCFTA goals by reducing trade bottlenecks. With 85% of the Batu–Arsi Negele segment already complete and equipped with electronic tolling and grade separated interchanges, the road enhances reliability, safety, and year-round transport efficiency for over 1.5 million people along the corridor.
