Ethiopia has launched the construction of the Mieso-Dire Dawa Expressway, a 144 km project within the Ethio
Djibouti Transport Corridor aimed at boosting connectivity, trade, and development. The expressway, jointly
contracted by China Civil Engineering Construction Corporation (CCECC) and Sichuan Road and Bridge Group,
will be completed in two phases over 48 months. Expected to enhance movement between the Oromia and
Somali regions and the city of Dire Dawa, the project will employ 75% local workers and provide training to
Ethiopian engineers. Officials highlighted the expressway as vital to Ethiopia’s goal of reducing travel time from
regional capitals to ports, while also symbolizing strong China-Ethiopia cooperation.
